Is your son struggling to make the transition to an independent adult life? Leaving the safe environment of the home can be a daunting experience. Many young men shun the challenge in front of them and take refuge in instant pleasures like video gaming or watching television. This phenomenon is commonly known as ‘failure to launch’. Dissatisfied with life at home, but too paralyzed to do anything about it, they often act impulsively, sometimes getting in trouble with the law. UCanachieve’s Kadima transitions program can get your son out of the house, get him moving, and get him on the road to a satisfying productive life.
What is the Kadima transitions program?
Kadima transitions is a 10-12 month program with rolling enlistment. Your son will learn to live independently in the best possible way: by doing it. Under the supervision of counselors who live in the apartment, participants learn essential skills including:
- Preparing and keeping to a budget
- Cooking and meal preparation
- Laundry and keeping a tidy apartment
- Personal hygiene
- Responsible use of medication (where appropriate)
Kadima transitions is not a ‘lockdown program’, but a supportive environment where your son will learn to take control over his own life. We focus on building up self-esteem through learning to make positive decisions with tangible results. By experiencing what it is like to succeed on his own, your son can break the cycle of failure and become an empowered adult.
Educational and vocational opportunities
As well as the basic life skills that everyone needs, UCanachieve will identify your son’s positive talents and find how they can best be put to productive use. We will work with him to identify career options that will motivate him to make progress. At the same time, we focus on instilling the ‘soft work skills’ such as punctuality, accountability, and responsibility that will serve him well in whatever he turns his hand to. Opportunities for career-building include:
- Work experience in suitable placements
- Vocational training and apprenticeships matched to your son’s skills and interests
- SAT preparation
- The opportunity to earn a GED (General Education Development) diploma recognized by colleges and employers.
Many of our alumni have found rewarding and sustainable careers in electrical repair, construction, carpentry, auto repair, plumbing, and landscaping. Others have gone to college and the world of white-collar work. It’s all about your son and what he needs to succeed and thrive.
