Alan Simanowitz, MS, LDTC is the director of UCanachieve. He combines over twenty years of special education experience with a philosophy that is based on teaching the whole child.
Alan describes his educational philosophy:
I don’t believe that we ever teach math, history or English. We teach children. When the child feels that we are relating to him as a person, he inevitably learns. He learns because we have connected with him in a very sincere and real way.
Alan’s child-centered philosophy leads him to develop very close relationships with every young man in our program. Through a caring and sensitive style of interacting, Alan helps each student realize that success is an attainable goal. The educational work begins with a diagnosis in which the student’s learning strengths are identified. These strengths become the centerpiece of a prescriptive and personalized success plan. Together, Alan engages in a unique journey with each student that touches upon social and emotional as well as intellectual aspects of the student’s self.
One of our recent graduates had the following to say upon finishing his course of studies:
Alan was much more than a teacher. He was more of a father to me at a time when my father and I could not even look at each other. With each success, Alan showed me what I was capable of accomplishing. Alan taught me to see setbacks not as failures, but as another chance to learn. What he gave me is worth much more than just this diploma. I will never forget him.
Alan Simanowitz received his Master’s Degree in Special Education from Adelphi University. His postgraduate specialties are in Learning Disabilities and Supervision. Alan and his wife, Joanne, a Dance Therapist, moved to Elazar, Israel, from Teaneck, New Jersey, with their five children. He enjoys music, movies and exploring Israel with his family and their dog, Sheleg.
Prior to making Aliya in 2006, Alan worked as Director of Special Services in the Public School System in New Jersey. He was an adjunct professor in Special Education at the Graduate Program of William Paterson University. He has lectured on a variety of subjects including, Attention Deficit Disorder, Learning Disabilities, Study Skills and the Parental Role in Student Success.
Alan is an expert in the field of learning disabilities and he believes in the importance of advocating for the whole child. He strives to understand a child’s social, emotional and educational needs while simultaneously providing support for parents and teachers so that the child can reach his full potential. In his work as a Learning Specialist, he utilizes the Diagnostic Prescriptive approach to remediation and provides support to students, parents, and teachers. Alan has worked with hundreds of adolescents in the demystification process and self-understanding. In Israel, he has expanded his practice to include the many children and teenagers who have struggled with adjusting to their new educational environment. He is very proud of each individual success.
At UCanachieve, Alan continues to instill this child-centered philosophy in order to facilitate his students’ journey towards self-actualization.
